But aside from the crazy schedule and the traffic you’ll be braving to attend these events, another dilemma that you need to face is the gifts selection! As much as you want to give unique gifts, you always seem to end up buying the same usual gift items because of the limited selections to be found in malls.

To lighten your burden, ShoppersGuide has found the perfect store to solve all of your gift-related woes and that is Common Room PH.

NOT TOO COMMON OF A STORE

The mini-lounge and hangout spot at Common Room PH

Common Room PH has been in the business for over a year now, opening last August 2015. But despite its young presence, the minds behind the store have been in the arts and crafts industry for almost ten years. Owned by sisters Roma and Maan Agsalud, what started out as a small project among the two sisters blossomed into a full-blown store that now houses thousands of creations from various artists and crafters. ShoppersGuide had a sit-down interview with Ms. Roma, and discovered the story and the beauty of this not too common store.

BOUNDLESS OPTIONS

It is common to find customers stopping for at least a couple of minutes in each section of the store just to discover and appreciate each item. Walking in the aisles of the stores will make you feel like a kid in a candy shop with their vast number of collections. But how are they able to source these many items?

When asked about the inspiration about Common Room PH, Ms. Roma shared that through their years in the arts and crafts community participating in fairs and bazaars, there is this one question that they keep on hearing from customers: where can we find you?

Common Room PH houses 80 artists and crafters that bear their own unique brand and style.

Customers are looking for a physical store that they can visit long after the fair is over; a store that houses all these unique items that can only be found in bazaars and fairs. Fortunately, the sisters listened and created Common Room PH.

Although the sisters had a hard time convincing other artists to join their passion project at first, eventually they found friends from the arts and crafts community who were willing to take the risk and jump on board.

From having 33 contributing artists when they just started, they now collaborate with 79 other unique individuals that brought their own kind of arts and crafts. Together with the sisters’ very own PopJunkLove products, a total of 80 arts and crafts brands will keep you happily browsing each and every corner of their store for hours. You’ll surely find at least a couple of items there that you won’t usually find inside a mall.

Despite having a large number of contributing artists and crafters, Ms. Roma still makes sure that no two items are alike. Common Room PH maintains a healthy mix of items inside the store to make sure that each artist and crafter is showcased properly. Ms. Roma is careful not create an indirect competition among their collaborators.

COLLABORATION, NOT COMPETITION

Common Room PH in a way is like a permanent bazaar of your favorite items and artists. Despite having their own space in Alabang Town Center for PopJunkLove, the sisters dreamt of a store to house the thriving community of artists in our country. So when the space in Katipunan opened up, it was a no-brainer for them to invite other artists that have become their friends through fairs and bazaars.

Along with the paper cranes are snippets of past workshops held inside Common Room PH.

Despite being a co-owner, Ms. Roma doesn’t treat her artists and crafters as mere consignors or sellers, but rather as partners. And that is probably why in just a year, Common Room PH grew from a small family of 33 artists to now a total of 80, including their own creation that is PopJunkLove.

The collaborative spirit is evident everywhere in the store. As Ms. Roma recounted, every artist contributed ideas and artworks too to make the design and layout of the store. From the paper cranes hanging from the ceiling to the wood works and lighting, the store is not just a representation of the Agsalud sisters, but of each and every artist and crafter of Common Room PH.

PARTNERS IN CRIME… AND CRAFTS

Common Room PH started inside the bedroom of sisters Roma and Maan Agsalud. From making their own accessories, their collection grew to a store of plush toys and other crafts that is now known as PopJunkLove. After a few years participating in various fairs and bazaars, the two decided to open up their own physical store in Alabang Town Center. A year later, Common Room PH was born to help customers find their favorite bazaar products in one place and for artists to have a permanent home. Today, Common Room PH can be found in two locations, one in Katipunan Avenue in Quezon City and the other in Powerplant Mall in Makati.
