Summer is finally here! Now that the dry season has come around, people can expect sunny days and warmer temperatures. The good weather also makes it conducive to do certain activities.

We asked our ShoppersGuide readers and they shared the top seven things they like doing during the summer. Read on to find out what these are so you can start planning your own summer to-do list.

7. Go on a family getaway or attend summer workshops.

Summer is a great time to go on a family vacation.

Starting off our list on the seventh spot is a tie between going on a family vacation and attending summer workshops. March typically means the end of the school year for kids and teens, freeing up their time to travel or engage in activities that interest them.

One good way to strengthen family relationships is to explore a new place together. The Philippines does not have a shortage of vacation destinations for the whole family to enjoy. On the other hand, traveling abroad exposes kids to other cultures.

Whether heading to a domestic or international destination, it’s important to involve the kids in the planning process of the vacation. Listening to their input improves communication among family members, while also making the trip something the kids can look forward to. Once there, it’s also important to teach safety tips to kids and teens, such as setting a curfew and not using expensive gadgets in public places.

6. Go to a farm, or embark on a pilgrimage.

If you have a green thumb or is a foodie who’d like to know where your food comes from, a visit to a farm might just be your thing. At a farm, not only do you get to take home fresh produce but also learn farming techniques used to produce your favorite fruits and veggies. Some farms even offer farm-to-table dining, turning their bounty into delectable dishes which customers can enjoy within the property.

If you’re heading to Baguio, you might want to check out the strawberry farm in La Trinidad, Benguet. There are also a number of organic farms in Tagaytay which is just approximately two hours away from Manila.

With Holy Week just a few weeks away, ShoppersGuide readers have also thought of going on a pilgrimage to reflect on their faith. If you want to go beyond the practice of Visitia Iglesia (Church Visit), there are pilgrimage organizers who put together itineraries for local or international spiritual journeys to various destinations such as Batanes, Bukidnon, Japan, Korea, Israel, and Palestine, to name a few.

When going on a pilgrimage, remember to dress and behave appropriately, especially in places of worship. Turn off your gadgets and set aside time to reflect and read the scriptures to make your journey truly meaningful.

5. Drink smoothies.

favorite summer activities Philippines

This summer, you can stay hydrated with a smoothie.

One refreshing way to cool down this summer is to drink smoothies, which ranked fifth in our poll. Made with fruits, vegetables, dairy, and ice, smoothies are the more nutrition-packed cousin of the milkshake.

Smoothies keep you hydrated, which makes them a great option for summer when you will be sweating a lot. Since they’re portable, you can grab one and head out the door if you’re too busy for a sit-down breakfast.

Nowadays, you can even eat smoothies with a spoon as some shops have started to sell smoothie bowls.

4. Eat 'halo-halo'.

favorite summer activities Philippines

Ah, what would summer be without a taste of this beloved Filipino dessert? Halo-halo, which translates to “mix-mix,” is a summertime staple made of different types of fruits and beans, milk, and shaved ice. Despite the dish being ingrained in Filipino food culture, it is interesting to note that the halo-halo traces its origins to a similar Japanese dessert called kakigori which was brought to the Philippines by pre-World War II Japanese farmers.

Owing to its popularity, halo-halo is readily available in most restaurants, some fast food chains, and even on the streets. Some creative restaurateurs have even created their own spin of this dish. Indeed, summer in the Philippines wouldn’t be complete without this sweet treat.

3. Train in a sports club.

ShoppersGuide readers think it’s important to be active to keep their bodies in tip-top shape, especially now that it’s bikini season. That’s why training in a sports club landed on the third spot in our list.

Outdoor sports clubs are usually dedicated to one sport, like football or polo clubs. On the other hand, indoor sports clubs are the more glamorous versions of the gym, with amenities like pools or spas in addition to standard workout facilities. In addition, indoor sports clubs have personal trainers who can guide beginners accordingly or provide motivation. They also have amenities where members can relax after an intense workout session.

Either way, sports clubs lets one meet new friends and get a dose of endorphins.

2. Go trekking and hiking.

Trekking or hiking lets one get fit while enjoying nature.

Trekking and hiking are good ways to commune with nature while also burning calories. They might sound the same, but are actually different activities. Hiking is mainly for leisure or exercise and is done on trails and roads, while trekking is a more intense, challenging activity on paths where transportation is not easily available.

Whether you go hiking or trekking, the benefits are similar. Both activities increase fitness, tone the entire body, and lower blood pressure and cholesterol. Studies also show that people are up to 50% more attentive and creative in solving problems when they spend time outdoors.

1. Go to the beach.

Going to the beach has health benefits, too.

Taking the top spot is everyone’s favorite summertime activity: going to the beach. In a tropical country like the Philippines, locals and tourists like to cool down by having the waves on their back and sand on their toes. With 7,641 islands to explore, one can never run out of beaches to go to this summer in the Philippines.

A trip down the beach is not only fun, but can also boost one’s health. Staying in the sun lowers depression aside from giving you 80 to 90% of your daily dose of vitamin D. And if you take a dip in the water, you also get anti-aging minerals that increase the elasticity of your skin. Just don’t forget to pack sunblock and your other summer essentials for an enjoyable time at the beach.
